Kitchen sinks and bathroom drains clog for different reasons, and we treat them that way. A kitchen line is almost always grease and food particles hardening on the pipe wall, so we run a cable sized to break through that coating rather than just carve a channel through it. A bathroom drain is usually hair and soap scum caught at the trap or a few feet past it, which clears faster but tends to build back up if nobody uses a hair catcher.
Main drain clogs are a different job entirely. If more than one fixture backs up at the same time, the blockage sits past where the branch lines join, and clearing it takes a longer cable run or hydro jetting depending on what's actually stuck in there.
We've cleared drains in older homes near downtown with narrow cast iron pipes and in newer construction with PVC that clogs for entirely different reasons. The tool changes depending on the pipe and the clog. The goal every time is the same: get the drain flowing and tell you honestly whether it needs anything more than that.
